A major goal of APLD is to educate members in the field of Professional Landscape Design. Core competencies are the basis for educational content development and serve as a foundation for programs that are designed for our members and non-members in the landscape design and green-industry community.
As the only professional association in the nation offering Certification for landscape designers, APLD is in the business of providing and developing programs that are educational, and with focused content that will provide relevant engaging information to attendees. These programs are designed to be suitable for a wide audience from emerging professionals and students to well-seasoned and Certified members.
The national Certification committee developed six core competencies covering basic topic areas that all landscape designers should be competent in. These topics are used as a guide for developing APLD’s programming content. They include:
• Landscape Design and Design Process
• Landscape Design Graphics
• Horticulture and Plant Knowledge
• Environmental Awareness and Sustainability
• Landscape Construction
• Business Practices
In addition to the national core competencies, the local APLD Chapter board considers professional growth and networking to be important areas of development for program content. Content is also developed based on member feedback and requests, as well as taking advantage of local gardens, sponsors, and speakers. All programs at APLDWA are developed under these objectives, balancing out the directives from the board, member interest and passion, volunteer availability and a lively annual calendar.
In addition, APLD programs are a huge member benefit; most events cost less for an APLD member than a non-member and one or two events each year are organized for members-only!
Education and programming provide opportunities not only to advance your career but to network with other design professionals and colleagues while earning CEU’s (Continuing Education Units, required annually for professional designer member status) and having a great time. Local programming is offered throughout the Puget Sound area and South Sound where the largest percentage of our members are located, and virtual content through webinars are also available throughout the year, tying into the larger APLD community.
