August 11th - Garden Tour and Vendor Spotlight
The Water-Themed Garden: Spas, Poolettes, and the Post-Pool Landscape
Date: August 11th, 2022 (Thursday) 10:00am
Location: Meet at Mercer Island Park & Ride, 8000 N. Mercer Way
This year’s garden tour will feature three beautiful gardens that deal with water in various ways and offer us the opportunity to peer behind the surface of the elegant designs to understand the technical challenges and thoughtful design solutions involved. Learn from our Chapter Sponsor Aqua Quip about their offerings and the collaborative process with designers, hear designers talk about their processes, network with colleagues, and enjoy lunch al fresco.
AGENDA
Meet up: 10:00-10:15am Mercer Island Park & Ride. In order to accommodate limited parking access at gardens, we will carpool in eight or fewer cars. We will distribute a printed map, which will be essential for navigating to one garden in particular, as navigation apps are incorrect.
Note: please arrive on time in order to receive your map and join the
carpool.
Garden 1 ~ 10:25-11am
See outdoor entertainment for the whole family, including a spa incorporated into existing decking, custom concrete and steel water feature, outdoor living room with built-in fireplace, putting green, and fire pit. Tiah Kimbrough of AquaQuip will provide a presentation on this APLDWA sponsor’s offerings and Robin Parsons of Spring Greenworks will provide an overview of the garden design process and collaboration with AquaQuip.
Garden 2 ~ 11:30am-noon
Explore the exciting potential of a post-pool landscape. Designer Lisa Port of Banyon Tree Design Studio will discuss the challenges and creative solutions of designing a new function for a space containing an aged-out pool, referencing the history of the site through flowing hardscape details, and weaving the thread of this design into the landscape over multiple phases.
Garden 3 ~12:20-2:30pm
End the day with lunch at another garden designed by Lisa Port. Hear Lisa and the project installer discuss the process of translating mathematical concepts into spatial form with a curved steel retaining wall and complicated hardscape details surrounding a custom, in-ground poolette and the ins and outs of designing the custom water feature and rill that run throughout the space.
